How to join the Group?

Postdoctoral Scholars

We are looking for highly motivated and creative postdoctoral researchers to study soft active matter systems in several application areas. Current topics of interest include but are not limited to the design of tunable synthetic and biological active fluids, characterizing rare events in soft active matter systems, machine learning methods in active matter, and hierarchical self-assembly of active colloidal materials. There will also be opportunities to interact with other experimental and theoretical soft and active matter groups at Penn State.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline with molecular simulation or Monte Carlo methods expertise. Successful candidates will have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: complex fluids and soft matter systems, fluid and continuum mechanics, active matter, computer simulations and modeling, non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Previous experience in the study of colloidal dynamics and self-assembly is desirable but not necessary. Several positions are available immediately, renewable on an annual basis, and anticipated to last at least two years.

Prospective postdoctoral scholars should email Dr. Mallory a short cover letter discussing their research interests and CV.

Graduate Students

Interested prospective students should apply directly to the Penn State Department of Chemistry Graduate Program.

Current first-year students interested in the group should e-mail Dr. Mallory for more information or to schedule a rotation.

It is also possible for graduate students from other Penn State programs to join the Mallory Group, provided there is initial coordination with your home department or program. Please e-mail Dr. Mallory for more information.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students at Penn State interested in research should email Dr. Mallory a short statement of their interest and CV. Dr. Mallory will then schedule a brief meeting to discuss mutual research interests.

As research projects take time and effort, a minimum of 2 semesters is expected from undergraduates joining the Mallory Group, with the strong encouragement to carry out summer research in the group. You will initially be paired with a senior member of the group to collaboratively work on a project, allowing you to gain experience in molecular simulation and theory quickly. Students will then pursue their own independent project with supervision from a senior lab member.

We encourage sophomore undergraduates to apply!
